⁠Flight Review

A Biennial Flight Review—commonly referred to simply as a Flight Review or BFR—is an essential FAA requirement designed to ensure that pilots maintain the skills, judgment, and knowledge needed for safe flight operations. In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration mandates that pilots complete a Flight Review at least every 24 calendar months to act as pilot in command (PIC). This process is not a test but rather an instructional evaluation conducted by a certified flight instructor (CFI) with the goal of reinforcing proficiency and identifying areas for improvement.

A Flight Review is customized to each pilot’s experience level, type of flying, and recent activity. It serves as an opportunity to refresh knowledge of regulations, revise essential flying skills, and address any gaps that may have developed over time. For many aviators, the review becomes a valuable learning experience that enhances confidence and overall operational safety.

A standard Flight Review typically includes the following components:

-Ground Briefing – A review of applicable FAA regulations, airspace rules, operational procedures, and safety topics.

-Flight Planning – Discussions or exercises involving weather evaluation, route planning, performance calculations, and decision-making.

-Pre-Flight Inspection – A thorough inspection of the aircraft, demonstrating proper procedures and systems knowledge.

-In-Flight Maneuvers – Practice and evaluation of maneuvers such as stalls, steep turns, slow flight, takeoffs and landings, and emergency procedures.

-Navigation – Demonstration of basic navigation skills, performance of cross-country elements, or use of modern avionics depending on the pilot’s typical operations.

-Communication – Proper radio communication with ATC, including clearances, advisories, and standard phraseology.

-Post-Flight Debriefing – A detailed discussion of performance, strengths, and recommended areas for continued improvement.

-Endorsement – Upon satisfactory completion, the instructor provides a logbook endorsement allowing the pilot to continue acting as PIC.

Flight Reviews play a critical role in aviation safety by ensuring that pilots remain proficient, knowledgeable, and confident in their abilities. Through periodic evaluations, pilots stay current with regulatory requirements, reinforce essential flying techniques, and maintain the high safety standards expected within the aviation community.
